level timestamps pinned in the comments! also forgive the crunchiness that appears on the sides of the screen at times, that's the fault of the emulator forcing the 3:4 game into widescreen and not the game itself welcome to my first recorded gameplay video! by request of a some of my tumblr followers, i decided to record a longplay of the japanese version of spyro 1. there are many multi-part let's plays of this around youtube, usually with audio commentary - so i thought i would try a full 120% longplay video with no commentary. the firsthand experience was semi-"blind" as i had only played through the first and part of the second homeworld in this version before starting a new game to record this by now a lot of people know the differences between the NTSC+PAL versions and the NTSC-J (japanese) version, but i'll give a rundown of the main differences anyway: - in japan, spyro was marketed as a cuter character all around, toning down his feistiness somewhat. you can also hear his cute voice when you jump/charge/glide - sparx is green all the time. when you take hits, you have to be more aware of the sparks he puts off. glowing yellow sparks, blue+pink sparks, no sparks, gone. i don't really know why they did this - the camera is semi-fixed and floats strangely and slowly behind spyro. if you don't spend a lot of time holding its hand, it may get you into trouble with enemies and platforming. the slow, less active camera was a decision sony japan made when localizing the game, to attempt to prevent motion sickness people may get when playing these fast-paced 3d games. this can be adjusted with L2+R2, and also by holding the triangle button when moving to get it to follow directly behind spyro. you see me do this a lot when charging or moving up stairs because i try to keep spyro as close to the center of the screen as i can - spyro's charge is much slower. again, this is to prevent motion sickness caused by the screen shifting too quickly. turning while charging is also more difficult (correct me if i'm wrong but it felt that way) and you can't jump mid-charge. i think they may have been trying to deter you from using the charge as a main mode of travel and to instead use it as intended (an attack) - also related to motion sickness prevention, the animations where spyro flies in and lands in the beginning of every level are replaced with a fade-in from black - you see a lot of signs with tips and hints and such all throughout the land. they're EVERYWHERE. i accidentally read them when they get in the way of my flames sometimes, but i don't go around reading all the signs on purpose here. that would double the length of my video! - an extra collectible, dragonfly eggs (not seen in this video) are added. google it, it's awesome - you may notice the dragons during the rescue cutscenes have been edited to lip-sync better to the japanese dialog! this was good attention to detail that you don't see often when games are translated to other languages these are the major differences. a few very minor things are changed in the geometry and layout of the levels so those were the facts about the changes... but what about my opinions on the differences? believe it or not, i didn't hate it at all. i thought it made the experience somewhat fresh. the camera's distance also gave me the opportunity to see the environments in a different scope, sometimes giving me really cool views i wouldn't otherwise catch in the original version of the game. i had mentioned on my blog that the changes more interesting than straight-up dis-likable to me. THAT IS to me personally though, and that is as a seasoned player of the original who mostly enjoyed this version FOR the added challenge of having to babysit a camera and charge at half speed. it filled my hands with more to focus on to keep me from just mindlessly playing the game, which i could appreciate as someone who could play this game in my sleep. the only thing that annoyed me at times was how the camera hangs up in doorways pretty easily; i say since they decided it was necessary to change the game camera, they could have maybe worked harder to fine-tune its behavior in tight spots. i don't think that this version of the game should have been anyone's first and only version of Spyro the Dragon they got, and i think it's a shame there wasn't an option provided from the start of the game to change the camera to the classic style. i think the major changes they made to the mechanics were not necessarily game-breaking, but they shouldn't have been anyone's first exposure to spyro because it probably turned off a lot of players when they noticed it handles pretty awkwardly like this. it's not a huge surprise that spyro failed in japan like it did, but it's sad nonetheless anywho, thanks for reading my take! i hope you enjoy/enjoyed the video as well. tell me what you think about the japanese spyro 1! for spyro stuff, follow me at http://breezeharbour.tumblr.com/
