"In...'Performing Haute Couture,' 2014, she is, as always, in command of the performance. She is no longer choreographed nor transforming, struggling to be heard, released or wearing others' costumes; she is not confronting bright lights in song, or her own shadow. She is wearing her Comme des Garcons two-piece suit to demonstrate and inhabit commerce, fashion, desire, ambition, influence. Standing fully formed while she raises her arm slowly, regal and unassailable, Lake is a woman who knows who she is and where she stands. She is an artist at her full creative powers." -- Georigian Uhlyarik, Associaate Curator, Canadian Art, Art Gallery of Ontario Suzy Lake has been examining and critiquing ideals of the body, gender and identity since the late 1960s. In her photographs, videos and performances, Lake draws attention to social norms and constraints and aims to diminish the barrier between the viewer and the artwork.
