Suzy Lake: The Making of 'Performing Haute Couture'

"In...'Performing Haute Couture,' 2014, she is, as always, in command of the performance. She is no longer choreographed nor transforming, struggling to be heard, released or wearing others' costumes; she is not confronting bright lights in song, or her own shadow. She is wearing her Comme des Garcons two-piece suit to demonstrate and inhabit commerce, fashion, desire, ambition, influence. Standing fully formed while she raises her arm slowly, regal and unassailable, Lake is a woman who knows who she is and where she stands. In her photographs, videos and performances, Lake draws attention to social norms and constraints and aims to diminish the barrier between the viewer and the artwork.
