Launched in 1991, Tata Sierra was India’s first compact SUV which was loved by most buyers and SUV lovers. This SUV was discontinued in 2000, but it still enjoys a significant fan following. This model also marked the debut of adjustable steering in India. Besides this, it also had power windows, power steering and a tachometer. With Sierra, Tata Motors officially entered the passenger vehicle segment. This SUV was powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine in both turbo and non-turbo forms. The regular model produces 68bhp of power, while the turbo unit gives 90bhp. Adding to it, Sierra was also available with 4×4 option. In early 90s or 80s, most of the cars in India were imported or designed outside. This tradition was first busted by Tata Motors. Sierra was the first product completely designed and developed in India. One can say that Tata Motors had revolutionised the Indian auto industry. It was launched at Rs 5.0 lakh for the base model, which was massive back in 1990s. This was the most expensive vehicle available in the market back then.
