TDR Conquers Malahat and Headed for Home Stretch

http://www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http://www.facebook.com/ctvvi SHAWNIGAN LAKE - When the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team pull into Shawnigan Lake school they're used to seeing a big cheque. But this year the students have been very busy. More than two dozen young people shaved their heads, and the school raised more money than ever before - $40,000. The Tour de Rock team leaves for Mill Bay, one step closer to the capital region and the home stretch, with only one obstacle in their path. "We were all thinking it's all downhill from here we forgot about the Malahat. You know what, it's nothing, we've done it so many times, it's just a hill... horses running back to the barn, almost in Victoria," says CTV media rider Erin Glazier. Just as she predicted, these horses have no trouble plowing their way to the summit. "It was a good challenge for us as a team, lots of communication. Vehicles passing us honking for us really made it," says Niki Hodgkinson riding from Saanich Police. It's downhill to Langford where Willway Elementary is jumping up and down and handing over a jug of money with the promise of more on the way. Next stop: Sooke, where the kids line the streets and fill the gym at Ecole Poirier, which is a special stop for the school's liaison officer Cst. Steve. "It's great, we've been here lots, I can't explain...words...I'm going to be thinking about this for the rest of my life," says Steve Martindale of Sooke RCMP. Junior Riders and survivors Joel and Daisy are in Sooke, who know what a trip to Camp Goodtimes can mean for a kid with cancer. "You get to make new friends, get up at 5am to go swim in freezing cold water" says Daisy. The Tour de Rock team will be up early Thursday to pedal through Victoria, Oak Bay, and Sidney.
