LVMPD Reminds Everyone about the Importance of Pool Safety As the weather warms up, we want to take a few minutes to remind everyone about the importance of pool safety. So far this year, the LVMPD has seen four child drownings. Tragically, two children have lost their lives in these instances. See below for the A, B, C, D’s of pool safety. A - Adult Supervision. Always designate an adult that can swim to actively supervise children around water, even if the children are active swimmers. It is important to make sure that they are aware of where the children are and making sure that they are accounted for. Also, know which children are swimmers, and which ones aren’t. B - Barriers (for your pool). Consider having a perimeter fence around the pool, with a self- closing and self-latching gate. If you have a stand-alone spa, make sure the spa cover is equipped with straps to lock down the cover and prevent your children from accidently falling in. It’s also a good idea to have alarms to the house door to alert someone that the door that provides access to the pool area/backyard has been opened. Be aware of dog doors and ensure that your children cannot get access to the pool through a doggie door. C - Classes (swim lessons, CPR). Ensure your family members know how to swim by taking swim classes. Classes can be for any age range, from young toddlers to adults. Also, make sure that you and your family understand and know how to use CPR. This class just might be the tool to help save someone’s life. D – Devices (pool floating devices, life jackets, and rescue tools). Know the location of a life safety ring, shepherd’s hook, CPR instructions, an emergency pool phone, or the lifeguard. If your children need floating devices to help them swim, make sure they are proper devices which are meant to stay afloat with persons holding on. Learn more at: http://www.poolsafely.gov
