During my final semester of college, I wrote a short. I was excited to shoot it as my 'last hoorah' of film school. That is, until my buddy asked, "Why don't you just shoot a feature? They're a lot easier to sell." He had a point. Why didn't I? I quickly turned a 17 page short into a 74 page feature that summer, and production began in fall. It took almost 3 months to shoot, and it's a miracle that it didn't take longer. Constantly switching between my many hats -including those of an AD, Producer, and Director- balancing cast and crew schedules, all while managing a full-time work and class schedule became the ultimate balancing act of my life up until that point. I even had to leave in the middle of production to work on a different feature. When I came back, the amazing cast and crew were still willing to work with me to finish the film. I graduated that winter and went into editing mode. All said and done, I'm proud of it. It was the first feature film shot by an undergraduate at Stephen F. Austin State University, and it was completely student-run. I can't thank everyone enough who helped to make it a happen. It even got an offer from a distribution company! They were willing to take the film under their umbrella, but wanted me to front all the cost. I tried negotiating, but nothing panned out, so it sat on a shelf. It may have remained on that shelf forever, but thanks to a cross country move, I found the original hard drive and full res-file. The film is about 12 years old at the time of its upload. What this film is about, more than anything, is the grit and determination of some young kids, all passionate about telling stories. That's not in the script, but is in the history of how The Aftermath came to be. Throw it on in the background, it would fit perfectly in your 'Bad Movie Night' lineup. I'm just happy that The Aftermath will finally have it's moment off of the shelf.
