Written mostly by John Lennon, the song was based on a long poem by Lennon but was cut down immensely. Fun fact! The instrumental bridge was played by George Martin in a baroque style, however he could not play it up to speed. So it was recorded at half speed and down the octave, so when sped up it had a different timbre, somewhat like a harpsichord.
