The New Zealand Premiere of DROWNING GIRLS By Beth Graham, Daniela Vlaskalic and Charlie Tomlinson Directed by Garry Thomas "... it will take your breath away ..." One of Christchurch's newest independent theatre companies is back with its third dramatic instalment -- The Drowning Girls. A Little Box At The Top Of The Stairs -- under the direction of founder Garry Thomas - presents the New Zealand premiere of the critically acclaimed play The Drowning Girls. This powerful script will take your breath away as it relives the true story of George Joseph Smith, a notorious scoundrel who drowned three of his wives in their baths to collect their life insurance policies. The Brides of The Bathtub was an early 20th century murder case that captured the public and tested the United Kingdom's forensic justice system. Smith accomplished his gruesome scam three times in three years. But justice has a way of catching up with people. The Drowning Girls sees Smith's three victims offer evidence to the court as they reflect on life with him and relive the shocking moments leading up to their death. The Drowning Girls premiered in 1999 at The Edmonton Fringe Festival, with subsequent productions in Alberta and across Canada. The play has been nominated for, and won, several awards and this will be its New Zealand Premiere.
