I chose to have a free birth, also known as "unassisted birth", with only my family and doula present. This decision was informed by many factors - a mix of knowledge and intuition. Unfortunately it is difficult to find a midwife who's hands aren't tied by the system these days. A system that denies women home births for a variety of reasons that they should not, describing variations of normal as "emergencies" such as: breech birth, going "over your date," water being broken more than 24 hours, just to name a few. I knew I didn't want my choices to be dictated by a system that didn't serve my or my baby's highest good so I chose to have a family centered birth with no interventions. It was the best decision I've ever made in my entire life. After just 2 hours of active labor, suddenly the baby was crowning and all I could do was ask the Goddess to help me.
