Despite his skill in battle, Kratos eventually came upon a battle he could not win. In a moment of desperation, he called out for help to the Greek God of war, Ares. Kratos pledged servitude to Ares, and in exchange Ares turned the tide of the battle. Ares eventually tricked Kratos into murdering his wife and child. Their bodies were burned, and their ashes were fused to Kratos' skin and turning it white. Henceforth he became known as "The Ghost of Sparta." Ares' treachery drove Kratos to seek revenge. He became the new God of war after murdering Ares. He was subsequently betrayed by Zeus, his father. Once more Kratos sought revenge and eviscerated his way through Mt. Olympus before finally killing Zeus.
