This is "The Indicator" located in Palos Verdes south Los Angeles Southern California. It is the big wave break on the south end of Palos Verdes "Cove". On smaller days it also serves as an indicator for set waves approaching into the other breaks in the area, North Reef, Ski Jump, and Cove. "The Indicator" can be ridable on smaller moderate days but really gets awesome the bigger the better! Mostly kind of mushy but very powerful, can develop chunky tube sections for experienced surfers only!! This place is a little remote with those steep cliffs as seen in this video, lined with a rocky slippery shoreline, and if you were to get hurt out there you are kind of on your own for awhile! People have been known to accidentally fall off those cliffs breaking bones with no help around for a few days! Needs a large W WNW winter swell, WSW can be primo! If the swell gets too much NW it will be shadow blocked from the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. In this video if you look far outside past the break you can see it was coming in mostly from a 265-275 degree direction. Summer time is mostly flat to small afternoon wind chop. The bottom is semi sharp boulder type with a few deep holes, not something you want to scrape or walk out on too much, booties help. Water temperature winter is mostly upper 50's to briefly some mid 50's. Air temperatures in winter are usually very moderate anywhere for highs during fair weather low 60's to low 70's, sometimes even a little warmer. Not much below mid- upper 50's for highs during rainy winter weather. Morning low air temperatures in winter mostly mid- upper 40's, can get into upper and mid 30's but not for long after sunrise. Most likely only a few times a winter season for The Indicator to be worth the extra effort to make the whitewater clobbering paddle out. The Cove is most consistent and pretty fun on almost any decent winter swell with less of a walk in or climb down the dangerous cliff!
