This may include any combination of drums (so long as the instruments chosen span a very wide range of colors and sound possibilities) and any instrument (including voice). Instrument I should be amplified not only for volume but for clarity and should be slightly louder than the drumset as one would in a classical sonata. Instrument I must incorporate a minimum of five (5) sounds / colors throughout the piece. Mutes / electronics may also be used. Players should use any combination of techniques to perform the material, changing pitches as they see fit. Performers should view the rhythms provided as one would a big band chart - with plenty of style and embellishments - and orchestrate the score as they see fit. As any pop standard, those performing the work know it so well that they can improvise around the theme and make it clear to the audience while still never playing it verbatim. Play Drift in this style. If one player decides to take more liberties with the score, the other should stay closer to the written material to solidify the "tune." Perform systems (defined by the boxed letters) A through K in unison at ff. Tempo should remain constant. Upon completing system K, performers should begin the piece again, this time performing all systems in any order they see fit. Instrument I should begin incorporating more percussive sounds to blend with the drumset. This should be in addition to the five sounds / colors previously used. Systems may or may not sustain a constant tempo throughout. If performers decide to shift the tempo (either slightly or drastically), they should do so in unison and without prior discussion (in other words - if one "drifts", the other should follow). Dynamics have been left up to the discretion of the performers. Each system should have an individual feel and style (an audible character shift). The character may change as each performer moves from one system to another. Performers need not coordinate decisions regarding feel, style, and dynamics.
