The Making of Murmura

Do you know how murumura (puffed rice) is made? I didn't till I visited Parsabhata haat (weekly market), near Balco Township, Korba. Some oil is added to raw rice, and mixed well. The raw rice is then added to very hot sand in a kadhai and allowed to sputter. In less than half a minute the rice transforms to white flakes. A sieving and murmura is ready — crisp and delicious. Those who have lived in Korba might be aware that the Parsabhata haat, which is between Balco Township and the plant area, assembles on Tuesdays and Fridays. Everything of daily use, from screwdrivers to vegetables, is available here. When I visited the shanty market on December 27, 2011, I found farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, all of which I felt like buying! The items were probably cheaper than elsewhere. Sellers of the same produce indulged in banter as they persuaded potential customers to visit their shop.
