In 2013, the senior girls at the Tiwi College on the Tiwi Islands (80 km north of Darwin in the Northern Territory) wrote a song about murrrakupuni (their country) and climate change, as part of a project on engaging Indigenous communities in climate change coordinated by CSIRO. The song was produced in collaboration with the NT Music School's VAMPtv - an online arts forum for remote NT schools. The project is part of the Inspiring Australia: Unlocking Australia's Potential Program, supported by the Australian Government through the Department of Industry.
Lyrics:
The ice at the poles is melting,
The winga (sea) level is rising,
The temperature is climbing,
What can we do?
Let's help our Murrakupuni (country),
Use less fossil fuel,
Let's help our Murrakupuni,
Walk and ride our bikes,
That's what we do!
That's what we do!
Reduce the use of plastic,
Reuse your empty bottles,
Recycle what you can,
Go green!
Let's help our Murrakupuni.
Use less fossil fuel,
Let's help our Murrakupuni.
Walk and ride our bikes,
That's what we do!
That's what we do!
We need the trees for oxygen
They give us air to breath.
Plant more trees -- let them grow
That's what we do!
What can we do?
Let's help our Murrakupuni.
Use less fossil fuel,
Let's help our Murrakupuni.
Walk and ride our bikes,
That's what we do!
That's what we do!
