If you experience difficulty viewing use the link to go to an alternative stream https://youtu.be/7_2sLZAiBok The Hume Barbour/English Speaking Union Debating Competition has run since 1930. It is open to teams of four senior students in government schools throughout the state, with 161 teams entering in 2016. The competition is proudly supported by the Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney. All debates in the competition have a one hour preparation period followed by speeches of eight minutes with a warning bell after six minutes. At the first stage of the competition teams are grouped into zones of four or more and debate in a round-robin. Once the zone debates are completed the winners debate against each other in a knock-out competition to determine the winner of the region. A finals series follows to determine the state champions.
