The ONLY Time LeBron James was a BENCHWARMER

I know what you might be thinking.. LeBron James the Benchwarmer? Does that even make sense? As the greatest player of our generation, LeBron James has had the great fortune of being the number one option on just about every team he has played on. Considering he dropped 20 a game straight from high school, it's a wise bet to think he was the top guy on every one of his high school and Junior high school teams going up. With that being said, there actually was a time THE LeBron James was a benchwarmer and it occurred during the 2004 Olympics. While he was just 19 years old, LeBron had the chance to go to Athens to represent his country. As this video explains, however, this could have been the only time in LeBron's life that he was one of the last guys off the bench. Definitely a humbling moment for a player nicknamed the King. James also became the first American to deliver a triple-double in Olympic play in 2012. However, things weren't always dandy when it came to James and the Olympics. 2004 was a debacle and James' poor behavior in the years leading up to the 2008 Olympics almost kept him off the team. Luckily for Team USA, he got his act together. So let's take a look back at James' best and worst moments of his decorated Olympic career. 2004 Athens Olympics While James had only been in the NBA one season at this point, he still had never known anything but being the star player on the team. In Athens, James was not the star, and head coach Larry Brown said that the youngster was not 100 percent receptive to reduced minutes. James spent much of those Olympics on the bench, averaging just 5.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in 14.6 minutes per game. Team USA failed to win gold in Athens, becoming the first American team to do that since they began using professionals. James certainly wasn't happy with his lack of playing time, and this was just the beginning of some of the negative feelings harbored by some toward James." James, the 2004 got milk? NBA Rookie of the Year, is the first player to be named to the USA Olympic team as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He will also become the NBA’s first rookie and youngest player to join the national team since professional players started competing at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992. “I am honored to be invited to participate on the U.S. Olympic team. It’s a dream come true for me to represent my country,” stated James, who will be 19-years, seven months and 13 days old when the ‘04 Olympics open on Aug.13 making him the youngest USA male basketball player to participate in the Olympics since Spencer Haywood in 1968 (Haywood was 19 years, five months and 26 days old at the start of the '68 games). “I look forward to joining my fellow Americans and competing against the best basketball players in the world. I am excited to have the opportunity to play for Larry Brown and his staff. I have great respect for coach Brown, and we have an Akron, Ohio connection.” Before playing five seasons in the NBA, Brown played two seasons (1963-65) with the Akron Wingfoots of the National Alliance of Basketball Leagues.
