The tools include a bowl of water, snails, oil, a chicken feather, and the knives - which come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Three or more people hold down the baby girl who screams out "Leave me alone!" It's estimated up to 20 million women have undergone female genital mutilation in Nigeria - 10% of the world's total. In 2018, President Goodluck Jonathan signed a law banning FGM. According to the World Health Organisation, female genital mutilation involves partial or total removal of the female genital area for non-medical - cultural or religious - reasons. The traditional cutter was born into the tradition of circumcision, and then keeps a strip of cloth. Many of the local women believe, if you have been circumcised, you will give birth easier. But the victims remember everything, despite the FGM happening at a young age. "I remember crying bitterly and everyone eulogising me," says one woman.
