Il gioco venne presentato ufficialmente il 15 ottobre 1998 durante una festa ufficiale per il gioco tenutasi al Museo di Storia Naturale di Londra Il gioco è stato sviluppato da Core Design e pubblicato da Eidos Interactive il 21 novembre 1998 per PlayStation e il 30 novembre 1998 per PC. La versione per Mac OS è stata pubblicata il 22 settembre 1999. Il 17 settembre 2009 il gioco è stato ripubblicato per PlayStation 3 tramite il servizio PlayStation Network e per PlayStation Portable.
