Few hundred years ago, the Hainan island of China has play a role in the revolt against the Manchu Emperor in Ancient China. During the revolt & civil war, the Traditional Hainan Martial Arts was born.
In the 18th century, the Southern Shaolin temple was discovered to be a hideout for the Ming loyalists and it was being attacked & burnt by the Manchu troops. Kung Fu monks & experts from the temple fled & settled in other parts of China, mainly Southern China which is also known as Ling Nan or modern day Guangdong. Such experts include the Shaolin 5 elders, the founders of Wu Zu Quan. This gave rise to many styles of Kung Fu, most popularly known being Hung Gar and Choy Lei Fut.
At that time, some monks from the temple also sought refuge in Hainan Island. As time goes by, the monks taught the locals their fighting skills and together they developed the unique system of training and combat, Hainan Martial Arts.
Legend has it that a Kung Fu fighter with a long winning streak came to Hainan Island to test his martial arts skills, after a few rounds with an old master of Hainan Hainan Martial Arts, the match ended with a draw.
The fighter thought that he won the match as old master was only blocking and evading his strikes, at times the old master returned a few strikes which he felt were insignificant. However, after he got back to the mainland, he got ill. The illness didn't recover after a few months and the doctors were puzzled with why such a strong and healthy man like him could've gotten symptoms which seemed like a terminal illness? This fighter made a trip back to Hainan Island to look for his opponent. The old man gave him a pat and a short massage, and after a short while he recovered from his sickness. After that, the mainland fighters know that the fighters of Hainan Island are not to be taken lightly.
It is hard to compare Traditional Hainan Martial Arts with other Kung Fu styles, but generally it emphasizes on long stances and upper body strikes. It also focus on throwing as little attacks as possible, but when the martial artist land a punch, it must do tremendous damage on the target. It looks strong and hard, but internal forces also play an important role in Hainan Martial Arts. Without internal ability, Hainan Martial Arts will not be Hainan Martial Arts.
These days, Traditional Hainan Martial Arts is considered a very rare form even in Hainan Island so Leroy Kwok decided to put up this demonstration video..
