We recorded this tree update at our 50 million trees party – so you can celebrate with us in spirit!
50 million trees planted means 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 removed from the atmosphere. It means 60,000 hectares restored, and it means over 500 different native tree species planted.
But we won’t stop there. We’ll continue to plant trees because our planet needs them now.
We've started a new reforestation project in the Cauca region of Colombia, a region that was until recently under the influence of guerrilla groups.
The project combines organic coffee fields with shade trees and forest restoration. This way, landscapes will be brought back to life, farmers will benefit from increased soil fertility, and peace will finally be given a chance.
Our project with Homme et Terre is going really well in Burkina Faso. More seeds sprouted this year than ever before. But that won't stop us from improving further. So we consulted a specialist in restorative agriculture, who visited the project and taught us some new techniques that will help us keep more water in the ground. This way, farmers will be able to cultivate crops between the trees. And because the project is going so well, we have began to roll it out in neighbouring Mali!
In our second year of collaboration with Progreso, we have planted 1.2 million trees in Peru, making it the largest reforestation project in the region. The Sierra Piura is even drier than Burkina Faso – part of the year, most of the water comes from glaciers. So trees that store water year-round are absolutely vital in these high altitudes.
Thanks for watching. Oh, and did you know we just launched brand new designs on our online shop? The sales from each t-shirt funds the planting of 20 trees at one of our reforestation sites: https://ecosia.teemill.com/
Ecosia is the search engine that plants trees. Every month we invest at least 80% of our surplus in tree planting projects all over the world.
Make Ecosia your default search engine to plant trees while you search the web: https://info.ecosia.org/#install
Ecosia is available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE, and many more.
