Tuberculosis (TB) - Brief explanation by a Malawi Doctor ( Vision talk)

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but they can also damage other parts of the body. TB spreads through the air when a person with TB of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, or talks. A Malawi Doctor named Steven Mitini-Nkhoma from the University of Malawi, College of Medicine and currently doing his Ph.D. at the University of Colombo Sri Lanka explains his new research about the fast-acting drug for tuberculosis. this is a review of the current efforts in development of anti-TB drugs, and it covers research happening all over the world. And in summary, some of the main advances are that we now have drugs in development, and others already licenced, then target bacterial pathways that were not targeted before, including metabolism and ATP synthesis. Secondly, for the last few years various biologics and other host directed therapeutics have been undergoing clinical trials, with varying degrees of success. And finally, there is on going research on strategies to reduce lung damage in TB patients.
