For our latest unboxing review we have for you the 2017 Volkswagen Touareg, a pricey mid-size SUV that has outstanding build quality, competent off-road capabilities, and a little problem with relevance. First launched back in 2002, the Touareg has been the corporate cousin to the even more expensive Porsche Cayenne, which has received a lot more attention over the years from both the Volkswagen Group and the buying public. Redesigned in 2010 and facelifted in 2015, the current Touareg definitely shows its age, but it's still (at least somewhat) competitive. VW has narrowed down the engine and transmission options to only a 3.6-liter V6 with 280 hp and 266 lb-ft torque and an eight-speed automatic. Power is sent to all four wheels standard. There used to be diesel options, but that, obviously, has ended. This V6 is only decent in both performance and fuel economy. The exterior and interior have both aged nicely. However, the Touareg carries a base price of $50,000, which is simply too much for its class, which includes the Ford Edge and Nissan Murano. There's also the VW Atlas factor, a brand-new three-row crossover that begins at around $30k. That all said, we appreciated the Touareg and enjoyed driving it, but we're not sure its hefty price tag is justified.
