The problem meteorologists face is that they can never know the initial conditions of the weather exactly. Air currents are chaotic systems and this means that tiny changes in the starting conditions can have large effects over time. This is sometimes called the "Butterfly Effect" because even the flapping of a butterfly's wings is enough to affect the prediction as time goes on.
