At the stroke of midnight on Sunday, 24 August 2014, Polish motorists holding a Category B driving licence for more than three years can now legally drive a motorbike with a 125cc engine. Without a test, without lessons. At the stroke of midnight, I emerge from our estate onto a public road for the first time. Halting and tentative, after just two hours of lessons and another two of practice riding up and down our drive, very slowly. The bike is a Derbi Cross City 125, bought on Thursday. Now I'm ready to get used to it, on the quiet local roads of Jeziorki, a southern suburb of the city of Warsaw.
