AMERICA SCORES A CULTURAL VICTORY IN VIETNAM
Vietnam Natural Sound Duration: 2.25"
The US military left Vietnam in defeat 20 years ago. Now the Americans are back -- and winning. American pop music and business cultures are increasingly prevalent in Vietnam. Many Vietnamese emulate the lifestyle of their former foes and seem to have confidence in US products. The younger generation, in particular, is modeling itself on peers in the West. They wear Western clothes and play Western-style pop music.
Reflecting the new capitalist mood in one of communism's last outposts are the advertising billboards of some of the world's largest and best-known companies: Sony, IBM, Levis, Mercedes Benz. Most have a commercial presence in Ho Chi Minh City, the former Saigon.
SHOWS:
Various billboards including IBM, Visa and an American film promotion. Vietnamese girl in Western clothing, riding a motorbike. Two Vietnamese girls wearing Western-style clothes and shopping. Levis sign. Tag for Guess jeans. Motorola sign on bus. Sign outside shop. Ice boxes. Baseball cap. Marlboro poster. Tex-Mex restaurant sign. Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop. Interior of shop.
