"What are the first couple things that come to mind when you think about German Oktoberfest?" This is the question I asked American college students outside the library at my university in Florida. Of course, everyone said beer (duh.), but the other responses I got were way out of the ballpark. Please enjoy!
Disclaimer - (This is what the group of individuals I interviewed think about Oktoberfest and Germany) Surprisingly, I did not leave out any accurate responses for the sake of building a funny narrative. My intent was not to make Americans look stupid, but instead to engage a demographic to test their general knowledge and understanding of the German culture. It is important to note, that the group of individuals that I surveyed may not be an accurate marker for the population as a whole. For example, If I had asked any of my friends these questions, they would have all had a lot more relevant information to disclose. To bring things back around, I do think that Americans are brutally uninformed about (Non-stereotypical Bavarian) Germany. Why is this? It's hard to say, we have a lot going on here and bits of German culture and politics have a hard time making it through, especially un-tampered with.
