Dr. Berg talks about being ketogenic diet adaptation. There is a difference between ketosis and keto-adaptation. Many people experience ketosis when they are sleeping as their bodies are in fat burning. However this does not mean their body is completely adapted to ketosis, whereby their cells have developed new machinery to burn fat and new fat burning enzymes.
Hey guys Dr. Berg here. Here’s a question, what is keto adaptation? Well, the first thing I want to differentiate is the difference between ketosis and keto adapted. If you just go to sleep at night and don’t eat anything and wake up, you are then going to eat breakfast and break the fast. You’ve fasting and probably were in ketosis as you were fat burning at night. Keto adapted means that your body has developed new cellular machinery, new enzymes for fat burning. Most people has been running on glucose and sugar for their whole lives and now we are going to adapt the body into ketosis which is basically we are forcing our body to run into different fuel source and that will take 2 – 3+ weeks and unfortunately it could take longer up to 6 weeks. Some people experience body changes when they are going from sugar to fat burning, they call them keto flu, rashes and all sorts of body issues and those are all easily handled and I put a link down below of what to do if you run into fatigue, or this and that. You are basically need more minerals and B vitamins(Nutritional Yeast), sodium, potassium and throw that into the mix and that should reduce those effects. But when you are going through these transition, you are losing weight, but you are going to lose weight a little more later because you have not build up the full capacity of fat burning enzymes yet. When you are fully keto adapted, you could burn some serious fat where before you couldn’t. Before you were discouraged starting out, just realized that you haven’t been fully keto adapted at this point yet.
How do you know if you are keto adapted? You don’t have any more cravings for carbs at all, you are not hungry especially between the meals and that you are very satisfied after the meal - If you eat a meals and you basically have to keep eating cause you are still not satisfied you still have an insulin problem so that is going to take some time. You don’t have any headaches, you don’t have any blood sugar symptoms, you are not cranky if you skip a meal, your mood is much better, you don’t have the keto flu anymore, don’t feel tired and not feeling funky, you feel stabilized, you are satisfied and you don’t need snacks and you could go long periods of time without eating, that’s when you know you are in keto adaptation.
