Skype is a very handy software to keep in touch with your friends. How does Skype work you ask... Watch and find out! What is Skype? Hello there my name is the Southern Gentleman and this is IT and Iced Tea. Today we are going to answer the question "What is Skype?" Skype is a voice over IP service and software application that was first released in 2003 and was bought out by Microsoft in 2011. Skype users are able to communicate with their peers by using a microphone using their voice, video by using a webcam, and instant messaging over the internet to anyone in the world. Calls to other users on Skype are absolutely free, but if you use Skype to call someone on a landline phone or mobile phone, there is a charge. Skype also known for its additional features, including file transfer, and video conferencing. So let's say you have a friend who is a Yankee from one of them Northern States and you can't get a hold of them because you don't have enough minutes on your cellular phone or don't have long distance on your land line phone, all you need is the internet on your computer or cellular phone and all you need to do is download Skype and make sure your friend has Skype too and why not download it because it is absolutely free. Now if you want to video chat you will both need a webcam with a microphone or if you just want to voice chat you would just need a microphone. But if you don't have any of that, don't fret because you can still text chat together no problem.
