This is a super-secret video we've been waiting to release for a long time now! This research appears today in Science, and we've created this video to help visually explain the findings! Here is the link to the actual article! http://www.sciencemag.org/content/348/6241/1358.short
Essentially, we were able to follow Dr. Meg Crofoot to the Mpala Research Station in Kenya to track an entire troop of baboons. Nobody has ever tracked a group of primates with GPS collars at this scale before. Our job was to film the process of capturing and tagging. It was an amazing trip, and the results are finally in!
First, if you didn't see the capture and tracking video, check that out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPX3etHUrwE
Now for the results. The data seem to show that these large males don't have any more influence over where the group goes than anyone else. But they found there were some rules. In particular, it had a lot to do with the direction little sub-groups were heading in. Of course, I'm not going to try to explain all the results here in this description. Watch the video and then read the Science article.
Special thanks to the actual researchers here - Meg, Ari, Damien, Iain. I'll post links to their work shortly.
