Hardcore Windows 98, Segment 4 Windows 98's backup utility supports a wider range of tape drives than Windows 95's, so you don't have to go out and buy a separate utility if you want to put that SCSI tape drive to good use. Windows 98 also supports the FAT32 filesystem, which supports drives larger than 2GB and uses highly efficient cluster sizes for 2-8GB drives. Some downsides of FAT32 include not being able to read partitions using this filesystem in Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95A, or MS-DOS 6.x, and it may break compatibility with a select few programs which depend on FAT16. If you're dual booting Windows 98 and 2000, the latter also supports FAT32, so you'll be able to access both installations from there. Windows 98's update service has long disappeared (I'm guessing around 2009), but in most cases it tends to run stable on a lot of computers without any updates applied. If you need to add updates to Windows 98, you can find an unofficial service pack online, as it will come with all the official updates in one nice package along with some extra things you may or may not want. In many cases, the best way to install an operating system is to do it cleanly, as direct upgrades tend to create all sorts of cryptic problems depending on what you have installed. Other strange quirks can be created from uninstalling an upgrade. For the most part, the uninstall utilities do a good job retaining your original configuration, but they may leave some things behind. The Windows 98 Help documentation mentions being able to work with ACPI-based hibernation, but it's not handled by the operating system at all. If you configure the computer to hibernate when you press the power button or close the lid, all Windows 98 does is relay the instruction to a hibernation utility created by an OEM specifically for your hardware.
