In this video Iain goes over how to build a super simple single stage charge controller that works with wind, solar and hyro systems with currents up to 30 amps. While single stage charge controllers may be slightly less efficeint than modern 3 stage pwm and mppt charge controllers in that they take longer to charge the batteries, they do have several advantages. This includes very little radio frequency noise, which can be a problem with using the pwm chargers near ham radio setups. Another is the ability to divert the power away from the battery bank, a feature that is required on wind and hydro systems since they need to be loaded down at all times to keep their rpms under control.
