I'm not a big Sinatra fan, but lately I've been humming one of the tunes he made famous. You know the one, it begins "Fairy tales can come true."
I was attending the North American Snowsports Journalists Association (NASJA) annual meeting at Killington and Pico, catching up on industry news, skiing with old friends (emphasis on the old) and looking for a story to shoot. My buddies are still skiing well past their athletic prime and when I suggested doing a story on seniors who ski, they upped the ante. Why not do it on seniors who ski after a heart attack? Why not, indeed.
Another RadXSports video.
Production notes:
All the exteriors, including the interviews, were shot with a Contour Roam. I like the Contour because it can record acceptable audio. The most popular helmet cam doesn't. The interior shots were done with a Canon Vixia, a new camera for me that I'm liking a lot. I used the Vixia at the banquet because it accepts a remote mic and the ambient noise made using the camera mic out of the question.
I'm not real happy with the camera mic on the Vixia. It loses presence really easily - the entire bass end drops out. I'm still experimenting with the settings, so anyone who can give me a hint will get a t-shirt.
The skinny on why I used the Contour to do interviews:
The night before I shot this story I recorded a two hour panel discussion. I use a 32GB SD card and it was pretty full after that. I put the SD card in laptop to copy the files before going to sleep. The next morning I forgot to take the SD card out of my laptop and went out with both my Canon and the Contour. I'm glad I didn't give up on the story, although I had my doubts about how it would sound.
