Activists in Berlin celebrated after a referendum to expropriate real estate giants passed with 56 percent of the vote.

Deutsche Wohnen & Co Enteignen wants to nationalise thousands of housing properties owned by large profit-oriented real estate groups

The vote is non-binding and would only become law if the ruling parties in Berlin’s Senate agreed to it.

The initiative demands the expropriation of real estate companies owning more than 3,000 units, which then would fall under public ownership.
