Thousands of people took to the streets of Berlin to demand a different housing and rental policy, on Saturday.

The march under the motto ‘Wohnen fur Alle’ (‘Living for Everyone’) started in Alexanderplatz, and continued along Unter den Linden and the Brandenburg Gate, before reaching the Victory Column, where a final speech was held.

“We in our Action Alliance demand a nationwide rent cap from the new federal government”, said a member of the organisers to the local press. In April, the Supreme Court of Germany toppled the ‘rent cap’ of Berlin for being outside the competencies of the city parliament.

According to the police sources around 4,000 people attended, whereas the organisers claim that up to 20,000 were present.

The demonstration, which was backed by unions and several associations, also asked locals to vote ‘yes’ in the referendum on the federal election day, in which Berliners will decide whether to expropriate large real estate corporations and take them into public ownership.
