Celebratory gunfire broke out in Kabul on Friday night following rumours the Taliban forces took control of Panjshir Valley - Afghanistan’s last resisting region.

It was not possible to indepently verify whether the takeover actually took place.

Forces fighting the Taliban in Panjshir Valley are led by former Vice-President Amrullah Saleh and Ahmad Massoud, the son of former guerilla leader and prominent politician Ahmad Shah Massoud.

Afghanistan’s popular TOLO TV carried a message from Saleh who said the fighting had been intense and that fighters on both sides had died.
