Afghanistan: Kabul residents gather outside evacuated Canadian embassy in hope of visas

Kabul residents gathered outside of Canada’s closed embassy in the Afghan capital on Saturday in the hopes of somehow securing visas out of the country in the wake of the Taliban’s seizure of power.
“Most of the Western countries have promised to our people to grant us visas, such as Canada,” said local man Omar Abdulah, explaining that many didn’t trust the Taliban’s promises of ‘amnesty’ for its opponents.
Ferozan Bdakshi said that she had been a refugee for ‘ten weeks,’
“We heard that aircraft were coming at the Kabul airport to pick us up and help young girls. Currently, neither Taliban nor US military personnel is allowing anyone to go inside the airport. We can’t blame one side but both sides,” she added.
Locals have been trying to gain visas at many foreign embassies throughout the city ever since it fell to the Taliban on Sunday, August 15, although many have suspended operations.
According to a statement from the Canadian Minister of Immigration on Sunday the embassy suspended operations when the Taliban took the city.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Tuesday that all Canadian diplomats had been evacuated from the country, along with the embassy’s Nepalese Gurkha security detail.

SOT, Ferozan Badakhshi (Dari): “I have been a refugee for the past ten weeks because of security threats. A number of people said our homes were to be checked. Women were abused, we spent three days at the Kabul International airport. We heard that aircraft were coming at the Kabul airport to pick us up and help young girls. Currently, neither Taliban nor US military personnel is allowing anyone to go inside the airport. We can’t blame one side but both sides. Poor people like me wouldn’t be able to find a way to go abroad. I was not satisfied with the former government and nor with the Taliban members. I wish God would destroy the home of Ashraf Ghani as he destroyed the homes of the people.”

SOT, Omar Abdullah (Dari) : “The Taliban have been entering Kabul for the past six days and promised and announced amnesty to all government officials, but we don’t trust them in many cases and thus people are not willing to resume their affairs. Most of the Western countries have promised to our people to grant us visas, such as Canada. But it is yet to be known about the upcoming government because they have been busy among themselves bragging. And currently the entire [world] has been worried and deeply concerned about what is going in the country.”
