Afghan Sikh and Hindu shops and places of worship were seen closed in Jalalabad on Sunday, as community members attempt to evacuate Afghanistan for India due to Taliban-related fears.
SOT, Shir Zaman, Assistant shopkeeper in Jalalabad (Pashto): “I’m an assistant shopkeeper of Afghan Sikh Gourmet Singh. As last Sunday the Taliban came to the city, we were terrified. We thought that the fighting would start. The Sikhs and Hindus left but didn’t know where they were left. Shops closed in these days.”
SOT, Mohammad Imran, Assistant shopkeeper in Jalalabad (Pashto): “When the Taliban entered Jalalabad, people were worried. People thought that the fighting would start, but the situation a bit good; all the Sikhs and Hindus left for India due to fears of Taliban.”
According to local reports, at least 72 Afghan Sikhs and Hindus, including two Members of Parliament representing the minority, were stopped by the Taliban from boarding an aircraft at Kabul’s airport on Saturday.
Over 300 Sikhs and Hindus reportedly stranded at the Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Kabul’s Karte Parwan are currently calling for the international community to help them evacuate.
