The Taliban removed the Afghan national flag from a Jalalabad square and replaced it with the Islamic Emirate flag on Thursday.

It comes a day after the group dispersed a rally around the flag pole killing at least three protesters.

Small groups of anti-Taliban demonstrators carrying national flags were seen in the city on Thursday despite the incident on the previous day.

SOUNDBITE:

SOT, Local Resident “We will not believe any one. We only believe in the government of Afghanistan. The Taliban opened fire on us. I will fight the Taliban alone, I will not accept Taliban. The Taliban opened fire on us in public. The Taliban say they will liberate Afghanistan. They can never liberate Afghanistan. The Taliban shot at the people of Afghanistan. We do not believe in the Taliban. We only believe in the government of Afghanistan.”
