Afghanistan: Suicide bombing kills at least 35 in Kandahar mosque

At least 35 casualties and several injuries were reported during Friday prayers in a Kandahar mosque after an unknown suicide bomber reportedly blew himself up during a packed prayer session.

According to confirmed reports, multiple assailants confronted the guards outside the mosque. Two of the assailants reportedly managed to get inside before blowing themselves up.

The extent of the damage can be seen with multiple shattered glasses and destroyed walls, tainted with blood from the victims whose clothes were piled up outside.

“The explosion happened when we were praying in the afternoon when two suicide bombers wanted to come inside. Our guard confronted them at the door, the clash began, and our guards killed two of them but the other two suicide bombers came inside and blew themselves up,” said Shite Elder Ali, an eyewitness.

There has been no official claim of responsibility yet.

SOT, Mokhtar, Eyewitness (Dari): “Our prayer was finishing, three people came out of that street, one of them was shooting and two others were running into the mosque and they shot the guards. Then a guard ran from that side and he killed a suicide bomber, one of the bombers blew himself up as soon as he entered to the mosque.”
