Afghanistan: Taliban flag flies over Kunduz's central square following takeover

A Taliban flag was seen flying over Kunduz’s main central square on Tuesday after the group took over the northern Afghan city.

Following intense fighting on Sunday, the Taliban took over most of the city, located some 300 kilometres (186 miles) north of Kabul.

Kunduz with its 270,000 inhabitants had already fallen twice in recent years in Taliban hands, in 2015 and 2016.

The city is considered to be located at a strategic crossroads in northern Afghanistan, between Kabul and Tajikistan.

Kunduz is just one of seven provincial capitals to fall to the Taliban in the last five days, with Farah, the capital of the eponymous province, becoming the latest to be taken on Tuesday.
