Afghanistan: Taliban guard Kabul airport as Qatari team arrive to restore airfield

Taliban forces were seen patrolling the area around Kabul airport on Tuesday, as Qatari experts landed to help restore flight services as soon as possible.
Militants with guns closely guarded the area, conducting vehicle checks on passers-by, whilst military vehicles could be seen stationed by the airport surrounded by barbed wire.
One local resident, Haji Nickmohammad, said he had come to see the “situation at the airport and it is bad, an aeroplane has just arrived at the airport I hope the airport will reopen soon and be rebuilt.”
Qatar sent a team of experts on Wednesday, which was the first plane to land following last week’s US troop withdrawal that left the infrastructure severely damaged. A second Qatari plane of experts reportedly arrived on Thursday.
Taliban commander General Mubin said, “you can see the armoured vehicles for yourself, tanks, planes and helicopters were destroyed by them [the Americans] and all has been left here. We will save it in museums, we will show them to the Afghan people to inform them that the foreigners want to profit from us.”
The United States officially concluded its 20-year deployment in Afghanistan on August 30.
