Thousands were displaced in the Afghan province of Kandahar, with hundreds of families forced to shelter in a mosque in the eastern outskirts of the city of Kandahar on Tuesday, as Taliban attacks continue throughout the province.
“There is rapid fighting, which is ongoing, and has displaced thousands of families in the different part of Kandahar city,” said Doost Mohammad Nayab, head of the immigrant affairs in Kandahar. “For them we prepare shelters in the different part of the city including living facilities such as water, food, electricity,”
He added, “While the fighting continues the numbers may increase.”
Zakira, a displaced mother seeking shelter at the mosque, said, “we have passed 5 to 6 days of severe conflict during which we could not eat or drink, we could not move around our home, we could just sit and pray and nothing else. May God bless these people who brought food, water and all other necessities for us.”
The departure of foreign troops and the advance of the Taliban is contributing to mounting political and economic insecurity in the country.
The Taliban said on Friday that they have already seized control of 85 percent of Afghanistan, although the Afghan government denies this claim.
The rapid advances made by the Taliban in recent weeks have raised concerns that the Afghan government could fall after the final departure of US and other troops that is set to be completed by September.
