A group of around 50 female demonstrators rallied in Herat on Thursday, to demand that they be given equal rights regarding education and employment, following the recent Taliban takeover of the country.
Participants held signs and chanted, calling for women to be allowed to work in government sectors, as well as to be able to receive an education, whilst Taliban forces monitored the gathering.
“[The Taliban] want to return to the past with their meaningless politics, or implement burqas in the name of Islam,” said Mariam, one attendee. “They act like our allies. Today, I demand that women be allowed to work in government, and that we be given the same status as before.”
The Taliban, who seized control of the country last month, have pledged that their leadership will be ‘inclusive’ and that women will be allowed to work within the limits of Sharia law.
The demonstration came just two days after the final US troops withdrawal.

SOT, Farzana Mohammadi, Social activist (Dari): “The government will not be stable without the presence of women. If [the Taliban] take away the right to education, to work, and to partake in civil society, what is their aim? And how do they think that their sons at home can be strong and complete members of society?”

SOT, Mariam, Protester (Dari): “They want to return to the past with their meaningless politics, or implement burqas in the name of Islam. They act like our allies. Today, I demand that women be allowed to work in government, and that we be given the same status as before.”

SOT, Farkhunda Haqyar, Protester (Dari): “There are women who have held posts in government office or in the private sector, they had jobs, but now they are sitting at home. Our demand is just that women be given the same rights as before, we don’t ask for anything more from the government of the Islamic Emirate which has been created recently.”
