A Tirana court has heard the testimony of former Prime Minister of Albania and former member of Democratic Party Sali Berisha regarding his role in the January 8 protest where offices of the centre-right Democratic Party of Albania were raided.

“In my testimony in front of the prosecutor, I emphasised that for every Albanian, for every friend and partner of Albania the ugliest, the most unimaginable act, the most criminal moment in 30 years, the most flagrant proof of the connection between politics and crime, was January 8 and not only that day,” Berisha told reporters outside the court in Tirana on Thursday following the hearing.

A co-founder of the Democratic Party, Berisha, who served as the country’s President from 1992 to 1997 and Prime Minister from 2005 to 2013 recently made a comeback into politics in an attempt to snatch back the leadership role within the party, a role currently officially held by former Tirana mayor Lulzim Basha.

This past Tuesday, Berisha was officially expelled from the party along with either other senior officials, all accused of having questioned Basha’s legitimacy.

SOT, Sali Berisha, Former Prime Minister of Albania and former member of Democratic Party (Albanian): “I came here to respect my core principles after the ‘Medusa’ leader gave his order. I want to say this: In my testimony in front of the prosecutor, I emphasised that for every Albanian, for every friend and partner of Albania the ugliest, the most unimaginable act, the most criminal moment in 30 years, the most flagrant proof of the connection between politics and crime, was January 8 and not only that day.”
