Ambulances were seen queuing for several hours at the Cervello hospital in Palermo on Tuesday.
According to a paramedic, up to ten ambulances with patients awaiting treatment were in the queue.
“Here are at least ten ambulances waiting, and in the meantime, people are dying on the street. There was a car accident, and people wait and die,” explained a medical worker behind an ambulance.
“How is it possible to work like this? You can even die. I can’t go to the bathroom; I can’t drink. You tell me how to do it,” continued the paramedic.
The medical workers worked long after their shifts finished to allow patients to receive treatment.
“I’ve been waiting here for several hours waiting to finish my shift; I don’t know what time I’ll finish at,” stated another worker.
Some ambulances have been diverted to the Partinico hospital, 45 kilometres away, on the other side of the city.
Talks are underway at the Cervello hospital to convert some areas in the hospital to receive patients.
The Cervello hospital experienced a similar situation on January 5 when 118 ambulance operators switched on their sirens in protest after being forced to wait for hours for their patients to be seen.
