Partinico hospital has entered emergency mode, resorting to an emergency medical tent to host COVID patients because intensive care units have now reached full capacity, as seen in Partinico, in the province of Palermo, on Saturday.
Vincenzo Provenzano, Director of Partinico hospital, revealed that the hospital had to face the issue of bed shortage using an emergency tent as many hospitals had to do during the first stages of the pandemic.
“I would say this baffles me because a camp tent should be for something temporary,” said Provenzano, adding, “In my opinion, we need - and I know by saying this, I’m not popular; I will receive the usual threats and insults from some people - we need a lockdown.”
As many countries around the world, Italy is also facing a spike in infections since the new Omicron variant.
According to data collected by John Hopkins University, Italy recorded a total of 108,297 new COVID cases and 223 COVID-related deaths only on Friday.

SOT, Vincenzo Provenzano, Director of Partinico hospital (Italian): “We need to clarify that the Omicron variant is less aggressive with people who have received their booster shots. This means that the hospitalised are either unvaccinated, roughly 80 percent - they people end up in the intensive care unit; they risk to die - and also people who have done two vaccine doses, but second one was received four, five months ago. The level of immunity has decreased fearfully, the antibody response decreased tremendously, the variant, as such, has a reduced response in the body, so even people with two doses risk a lot.”
SOT, Vincenzo Provenzano, Director of Partinico hospital (Italian): “Besides this problem, in parallel, there’s also, naturally, a spike in hospital bed requests that we are facing, in a fourth wave, with emergency tents. I would say it almost baffles me because a camp tent should be for something temporary. This emergency must be addressed with gravity; the plan must be programmed. How? In my opinion, we need - and I know by saying this, I’m not popular; I will receive the usual threats and insults from some people - we need a lockdown. During the lockdown, we can adjust the situation, and we encourage the population to get vaccinated, but not with a 100 euros fine. Encourage the population because not getting vaccinated means killing ourselves and others, and never come out of this.”
