Argentina: Hundreds march in Buenos Aires against IMF debt repayment

Hundreds rallied in Buenos Aires on Thursday to oppose the repayment of the country’s debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Protesters held signs and banners reading ‘IMF get out’ as the country continues to experience an economic crisis.
“The agreement with the International Monetary Fund equals to recognising 45,000 million dollars (40.4 million euros) of a debt contracted by the Macri government, the previous government,” said the National Deputy of the Left Front, Juan Carlos Giordano.
After years of debt crises, Argentina is attempting to pay back billions in debt repayments by agreeing a new deal with the IMF.

SOT, Juan Carlos Giordano, Member of Parliament (Spanish): “It is said that this payment could be put in danger, but what is not in danger is the agreement with the International Monetary Fund. The agreement with the International Monetary Fund equals to recognising 45,000 million dollars (40.4 million euros) of a debt contracted by the Macri government, the previous government. The Macri government used it for the ‘carry trade,’ for capital flight, in which money did not go to national interests.”

SOT, Celeste Fierro, Member of MST Argentina (Spanish): “Only the payment for January would mean the construction of 43,000 new homes or the generation of 170,000 new jobs, so we see what the priorities are, the payment to the International Monetary Fund continues to be guaranteed, to the interests of these international funds that resolve the structural problems of the country when we are in a situation of growing poverty and economic, social and health crisis.”

SOT, Gabriel Solano, Member of City Parliament (Spanish): “This agreement with the International Monetary Fund is going to be negative for the Argentine people, it is known that it is an adjustment, there are going to be fewer retirements, less wages, a monetary devaluation. So we are going to demand that there is no agreement with the International Monetary Fund and that the country’s resources are used for its development.”
