Argentina: Thousands take to streets to back government negotiations with IMF

Thousands of people attended a demonstration in Buenos Aires’s Plaza de Mayo on Friday, as the Argentine government negotiates the country’s debt repayment with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Demonstrators were seen holding signs and banners in support of the government and rejecting the IMF.

In a speech, President Alberto Fernandez stated that the government would not ‘negotiate anything that means compromising growth.’

Meanwhile, Vice President Cristina Fernandez said that the country ‘does not lack dollars,’ and that the IMF would be crucial to help Argentina recover money from ‘tax havens’ used for billions of dollars’ worth of tax evasion.

The Argentine government must refinance a debt of more than 43 billion USD (38 billion EUR) with the IMF, following an agreement signed in 2018 between the IMF and the country’s former president, Mauricio Macri.

The demonstration was also attended by the former presidents of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, and Brazil, Lula da Silva.
