Wildfires ravaged through the Estero Santa Lucia Reserve in Corrientes on Saturday.

Drone footage captured over the Estero Santa Lucia Reserve highlights the challenges faced by local firefighters and volunteers, who tackled the flames with tree branches and simple tools.

“The animals, the cows, the horses, if you see that there’s a fire burning you can save them, but the wild animals who will save them? No one. And that’s what hurts the most,” commented Ana Comarca, a local resident.

Fires have severely affected the province since December, laying waste to more than 500,000 hectares (1.2 million acres) and leaving a scorched landscape behind.

In January, Argentina’s Minister of the Environment Juan Cabanide decreed a six-month long state of emergency due to the ongoing fires and drought.
