Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport was packed with emotional reunions on Monday after the country’s international borders opened for fully-vaccinated travellers.
Friends and relatives, some who had gone years without seeing each other due to COVID-19 restrictions, were seen hugging in the arrivals building.
A ‘welcome wagon’ had also been put on display reading: ‘Welcome back. You were worth the wait.’
The reopening of borders means that fully-vaccinated travellers will not need to quarantine upon arrival, whilst those who are unvaccinated will still require a travel exemption and be subject to state quarantine requirements.
“I spent quite a lot of time in Europe and the US where they had a very different approach to [quarantine] and have got pretty much the same place. So did we need it, have we saved lives, probably, has it been very difficult, has it had a very big economic impact, sure,” said business traveller David Withers.
New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet also gave a speech at the airport, naming the event ‘a great day for our city, our state, and our country.’
Since November, fully-vaccinated Australians have been able to travel in and out of the country, but the rule did not apply to non-Australian residents.
